Many teenagers are indifferent to the First Amendment. In a nationwide study of 100,000 high school students released early this year by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, about three-quarters of those surveyed said they either don't know how they feel about their First Amendment rights or they just take them for granted.

The walls lack a student-of-the-month plaque, an honor roll list and a trophy display case. Outside the classroom, you won't find any school group competing in sports or academic contests. Yet, students flock here every day, year-round. Dozens more are on a waiting list. Welcome to Key Learning Community, the first Indianapolis elementary school to rely on the multiple intelligence theory that learning can't always be measured by standardized tests. The Indianapolis Public Schools elementary opened in 1987. A middle school followed in 1993, and a high school opened in 1999.

Every other Friday during the school year, Ben Davis High School Key Club students have a sure way to get support for their club's community service projects: They appeal to the stomach. The club's doughnut sale draws hordes of students within minutes of opening. The group pulls in $100 every time, which adds up to $1,800 a year.

Tasha Borta and Katelynn Todd think it's only fair that they be allowed on the North Montgomery High School wrestling team -- even though their teammates and a lot of their competitors are male.

When Josiah Kaufman was a freshman at Carmel High School, he would bring his lunch every day. When the period was over, he would help his friends return their lunch trays out of "courtesy," he said. Soon, he began helping other students clean up. "It became this thing where I went all around the cafeteria and started picking up everyone's trays when they were done. It was so funny. People were like, 'Why in the world are you doing this?'" Josiah was just being nice. It also was his way of adapting to new people and a new school system. It was Josiah's first year in a public school.
